Which NeatPDF tools upload your file?
19 of our 22 tools never upload your file: they run in your browser, on your device. The other 3 can. Compress PDF uploads by default, PDF to Word always does, and Edit PDF only when you compress inside the editor. Below is where each file goes, and how to check it yourself.
Does Compress PDF upload my file?
Yes, by default, at every compression level. Your file travels over an encrypted connection to our server, which compresses hardest. We delete it as soon as the result is sent back, and a sweep removes anything left over after an hour. To keep the file on your device, choose “Keep it in your browser instead” before you start.
Does PDF to Word upload my file?
Yes, always: there is no in-browser version. Your file goes to our server, which passes it under a random name to ConvertAPI, a third-party conversion service, and sends the Word file back to you. Our server removes its copies when the download ends. We can't yet tell you when ConvertAPI removes its copy, so we make no promise about it.
Does Edit PDF upload my file?
Only if you compress inside the editor. Editing, redaction and every other editor action run in your browser. The editor's Compress dialog opens on Low, which also stays on your device. Balanced and Maximum send the file to our server, as Compress PDF does. If that upload fails, the editor compresses in your browser instead and tells you so.
Which tools never upload my file?
The other 19, listed below. Merging, splitting, rotating, converting to and from images, protecting, unlocking, watermarking, numbering pages, checking accessibility and the rest run entirely in your browser, using code served from neatpdf.com. Your file is read and written on your device and is never sent to us or to anyone else.
What does NeatPDF see when a tool runs in my browser?
Not your file. Your browser loads the tool's code from neatpdf.com, checks your daily task count with our server, and sends anonymous analytics to Plausible: a page view when the page opens, and events such as a completed task. Each carries the page’s address and the page you came from, and an event also names the tool you used. None of these requests carries your file, its name, its size or anything in it.

How can I check this myself?
On a computer, your browser's developer tools list every request a page makes. It takes about a minute.
- Open the developer tools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and choose the Network tab.
- With the Network tab open, go to a tool's page, for example Merge PDF.
- Add your file and run the tool.
- Read the requests. A tool that runs in your browser makes none that carries your file.
What a browser tool shows
pdf.worker.min.mjspdfium.wasmqpdf.wasm- the tool's PDF engine, loaded from neatpdf.com; which of these you see depends on the tool
quota- your daily task count, with no file attached
event- Plausible analytics: a page view, and events such as a completed task; each carries the page’s address, and an event also names the tool
What an upload looks like
A POST request whose size is close to your file's, to one of these addresses. Only Compress PDF, PDF to Word and the editor's Compress send one.
