Common Uses for PDF Compression
PDF too large to email?
Get a PDF under your email provider's attachment limit so it sends the first time instead of bouncing back.
Save storage space
Save storage space on your device or cloud drive. Compressed PDFs take up less room without sacrificing readability.
Meet upload size limits
Meet file size requirements for job applications, government forms, university submissions, and other online portals that cap uploads at 5-10 MB.
Share files faster
Share smaller files faster over messaging apps, Slack, or file-sharing services. Smaller PDFs load quicker for recipients too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this PDF compressor free?
Yes, you can compress up to 3 PDFs per day for free without signing up. Need more? Grab a 24-hour unlimited day pass for $3.99 or go Pro for $12/mo.
Is it safe to compress PDFs online?
Yes. By default your PDF is compressed on our servers, which gives the strongest result, and the file is deleted as soon as processing finishes. If you'd rather it never leave your device, choose "In your browser" before compressing: everything then happens locally at the same levels, though some image types shrink more on our servers. Neither option needs an account, and we never keep or share your documents.
How much can I reduce my PDF size?
It depends on the PDF. Image-heavy documents (scans, photos) can shrink by up to 90%. Text-heavy PDFs with embedded fonts typically see 20-40% reduction. Already-optimized files may see smaller gains. Use the Recommended or Maximum preset for the best results.
Can I compress a PDF without losing quality?
Close to it. The Low level re-encodes images at high quality without shrinking them, so pages look the same on screen and in print, though it isn't bit-for-bit identical to the original. Recommended and Maximum also scale images down for much smaller files, tuned so documents still read well on screen.
What is the maximum file size I can compress?
Up to 50 MB per file, on every plan, Pro and Day Pass included. Support for larger files is on the roadmap.
Can I compress multiple PDFs at once?
Not yet: every plan compresses one PDF at a time. Free covers 3 PDFs a day. A 24-hour day pass ($3.99) or Pro ($12/month) removes the daily limit, so you can compress as many files as you need, one after another.
Does the compressor work on my phone?
Yes. It works in Safari and Chrome on iPhone and Android, with no app to install. Tap Select PDF, pick the file from your phone's files or downloads, then tap Compress PDF. The smaller copy downloads like any other file.
My PDF is too large to email or upload. Can this help?
Usually, yes. Most email services cap attachments at 25 MB, and job, university and government portals often cap uploads at 5-10 MB. Start with the Recommended level: it recompresses images, which is where most of a PDF's size tends to be. If the file is still too big, compress the original again with Maximum. Scans and photo-heavy PDFs shrink the most; text-only PDFs shrink less.
Does compressing a PDF upload my file?
Only if you use our servers, which is the default because it compresses hardest. The file travels over an encrypted connection and is deleted as soon as it's processed. Choose "In your browser" before you compress and the file never leaves your device; compression then runs locally at the level you pick.
Why didn't my PDF get much smaller?
It was probably already optimized. Text-only PDFs and files exported with compression turned on have little left to remove, so a small saving is normal, and the result screen says so when that happens. Scans and photo-heavy PDFs are where the big savings are.
