Common Reasons to Crop a PDF
Remove excess margins
Trim oversized margins from scanned documents, exported slides, or academic papers. Reduce whitespace to make content fill the page and improve readability.
Prepare for printing
Crop PDF pages to match your printer's paper size. Resize A4 documents to US Letter (or vice versa) so content prints correctly without scaling or cut-off edges.
Clean up presentations
Remove slide borders, speaker notes areas, or extra whitespace from PDF presentations. Deliver clean, full-page slides for sharing or embedding.
Fix scanned documents
Remove scanner borders, black edges, or alignment marks from scanned PDFs. Crop to the actual content area for a professional, clean result.
Optimize for e-readers
Crop PDF margins to maximize content on small e-reader screens. Remove headers, footers, and page numbers that waste space on Kindle or tablet displays.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I crop a PDF online?
Upload your PDF to our tool, choose "Trim Margins" or "Preset Size" mode, configure your crop settings, and click "Crop PDF." Your cropped file is ready to download in seconds — and your file never leaves your device.
What is the difference between Trim Margins and Preset Size?
"Trim Margins" lets you enter exact inset values (top, right, bottom, left) in millimeters or inches to remove a specific amount from each edge. "Preset Size" crops the page to a standard paper size like A4, Letter, or Legal, with an alignment grid to position the crop area.
Can I crop only specific pages?
Yes! Choose "Custom range" under the Pages option and enter the starting and ending page numbers. Only those pages will be cropped; the rest remain unchanged.
Will cropping change my PDF's content?
Cropping sets a CropBox on the page, which tells PDF viewers to display only the cropped area. The original content is still in the file but hidden outside the crop boundaries. This is the standard, non-destructive way PDF cropping works.
What page sizes are available as presets?
We support A3 (297×420 mm), A4 (210×297 mm), A5 (148×210 mm), US Letter (8.5×11 in), and US Legal (8.5×14 in). More sizes may be added in future updates.
How does the alignment grid work?
When using Preset Size mode, the alignment grid controls where the crop area is positioned on the original page. For example, "center" places the crop area in the middle, "top-left" anchors it to the top-left corner. This is useful when your content is not centered on the page.
Is it safe to crop PDFs online?
With NeatPDF, yes — because your files never leave your device. Our tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. You can verify this by checking your browser's network tab: zero file uploads occur. Most competitors upload your files to their servers.
Can I undo the crop after downloading?
The crop is applied as a CropBox, which means the original page content is preserved but hidden. Some PDF editors (like Adobe Acrobat) can remove or modify the CropBox to restore the full page. However, we recommend keeping a copy of the original file.
What units can I use for margin values?
You can enter margin values in millimeters (mm) or inches (in). Use the unit toggle to switch between them — values are automatically converted when you switch.
Does cropping reduce the PDF file size?
Cropping sets a CropBox but does not remove the hidden content, so file size stays roughly the same. To reduce file size after cropping, use our Compress PDF tool.
