Method 1: Split It in Your Browser (Free, Unlimited)

There are four ways to do it, and picking the right one saves a lot of clicking:

• Extract Pages — select the pages you want and get one new PDF containing just those. Use this when you need a handful of pages out of a long document.
• Custom Ranges — type something like 1-3; 5-6; 8 and get a separate file per group. Semicolons separate the files. This is the one for splitting a report into chapters.

Method 2: Print to PDF With a Page Range

Every operating system can do a crude version of this:

1. Open the PDF and choose File > Print
2. Set the page range to the pages you want
3. Choose Save as PDF (macOS) or Microsoft Print to PDF (Windows)
4. Save

Limitations: This flattens the document. Links, bookmarks, form fields and attachments are lost, and it only produces one file at a time, so splitting into chapters means repeating the whole process for each. Text usually stays selectable, but not always.

Method 3: Preview on Mac

1. Open the PDF and choose View > Thumbnails
2. Select the pages you want, holding Command for multiple
3. Drag them out to the desktop, or use File > Export Selected Pages

Limitations: macOS only. Dragging thumbnails is easy to get subtly wrong with large documents, and there's no equivalent of custom ranges — every group means another manual selection.

Choosing the Right Split

• Check the page numbers on screen, not in the document. A report whose printed page 1 is the fifth page of the file is the single most common source of wrong ranges. Go by the position in the file.
• Extracting is not redacting. Splitting out pages 4 to 6 removes the other pages, but anything sensitive on those three pages goes with them. Splitting is not a privacy tool by itself.

Can I split a PDF into more than two files at once?

Yes. Use Custom Ranges and separate each group with a semicolon — 1-10; 11-20; 21-30 produces three files in one go. One Per Page produces as many files as the document has pages.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. The pages are copied into new documents without being re-encoded, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution.

Will the split files be smaller?

Smaller than the original, but not proportionally. PDFs share resources such as fonts across pages, so each piece carries its own copy of what it needs. If size is the goal, compress the results afterwards.

Is there a limit on how many pages I can split?
